TURN THE KILN INTO A PUBLIC CENTER

Fornace Penna rises on the wind-scoured cliffs of southern Sicily, just beyond a fishing hamlet, facing the open Mediterranean. Built between 1909 and 1912, the brickworks was sited for logistical reasons, close to the clay quarry, the railway, and the sea. Its vast, arcade-pierced mass is often compared to a seaside “cathedral.” Today, the monumental shell remains, slowly crumbling under salt and storms.

Following the Sicilian Region’s recent public purchase of the site, participants in this competition are invited to reinterpret the ruin as a civic center: a place for public services, with spaces for meetings, study, and work.
