My Italian avdenture

Hi, my name is Sarah.

Before the summer began, I was hesitant to join the architecture workshop in Florence. As someone who has always been on the shy side, the thought of participating in such a significant event, far from home and surrounded by strangers, was daunting. I feared being alone in a crowd, unable to connect with others who shared my passion for architecture. But as I look back now, deciding to step out of my comfort zone and attend the workshop was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It turned out to be an experience that not only transformed my skills and understanding of architectural restoration but also helped me overcome my shyness and forge lasting friendships.

This summer, I embarked on an extraordinary journey by participating in a summer architecture workshop in Florence, arguably the most beautiful city in the world. The experience was more than a course; it was a voyage into the depths of architectural creativity, restoration, and self-discovery, set against the backdrop of a city that breathes history and art.

From the moment I set foot in Florence, the city’s rich architectural heritage enveloped me. Every street, every building was a living textbook of history and art, offering lessons that went beyond the confines of our workshop. This unique setting provided an unparalleled opportunity to study and experience architectural restoration firsthand.

The workshop itself was an immersive dive into the world of architectural restoration. We explored the delicate balance of preserving historical integrity while integrating modern functionality. The hands-on experience in this specialized field was like uncovering layers of history, revealing stories etched in stone and mortar. Each project was a journey back in time, a chance to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

But this journey wasn’t just about professional growth; it was also a deeply personal and social experience. I made countless friends, each with their own passion and perspective on architecture. These friendships were forged in the crucible of shared experiences – from the intense focus of our restoration projects to the leisurely exploration of Florence’s wonders. We connected not just as students or future architects but as companions on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

The workshop pushed me out of my comfort zone, both professionally and personally. Working on real-life restoration projects in such a historically rich city challenged me to think differently about architecture. It wasn’t just about creating something new; it was about honoring and preserving the past. This perspective was a profound shift from my previous understanding of architecture.

The most magical moments, however, were the impromptu gatherings and discussions against the backdrop of Florence’s timeless beauty. The city’s artistic and architectural marvels were not just sites to visit but also sources of inspiration and reflection. These moments, filled with laughter, debates, and insights, were when I truly felt the essence of being part of something larger—a global community of architects dedicated to the preservation and celebration of our cultural heritage.

As the summer drew to a close, I realized that the workshop in Florence was not just a chapter in my academic life; it was a milestone in my personal and professional journey. I emerged not just with enhanced skills in architectural restoration and a deeper understanding of history but with a renewed passion for architecture, a network of friends from around the world, and a clearer vision of the architect I aspire to be.

In summary, the summer architecture workshop in Florence was an unforgettable experience that shaped me in profound ways. It was an adventure in learning, a journey of self-discovery, and a celebration of the art and science of architecture. To those contemplating such an experience, I say: go for it. It’s more than a workshop; it’s a gateway to discovering your true potential as an architect and as an individual, in the heart of the most beautiful city in the world.
