The Stone Perimeter investigates the adaptive reuse of fortifications through architectural design. Once conceived as tools for territorial control, castles, towers, and walls can today be interpreted as dynamic palimpsests, capable of preserving their history while also generating spaces that accommodate new functions. The book, which blends theory and practice, brings together four introductory essays (by Carles Enrich, Xavier Ros Majó / Harquitectes, Markus Scherer, Andrea Zamboni) and a series of exemplary case studies, demonstrating how adaptive reuse can be a sustainable strategy for Europe’s lesser-known heritage. The concluding section focuses on the results of an educational experience with international students, Reuse Italy – Summer Architecture Workshop 2024, exploring the ruinous condition of the Rocca di Pietrasanta as a case study for a musealization project that serves the territory and generates renewed public value.
